Headline News

So the big news here this week is that Muammar Gaddafi was in town, as well as a number of presidents from African nations, to dedicate the new mosque, largely funded by Libya.

The headline the day after the dedication was "Gaddafi says Bible was rewritten."

The headline the day after that was "Bishops say: 'Ignore Gaddafi.'"

Posters of Gaddafi were plastered all over town. Also President Museveni announced that Makarere Road, the major thoroughfare in front of Makarere University, is to be renamed Gaddafi Road.

Did any of this make the U.S. papers? Just curious. In "The East African," the only U.S. news I saw, besides an Assistant Secretary of State giving a major speech on Ethiopia, was the resignation of Eliot Spitzer.

CNN apparently reported this, but I can find no mention of it in NYTimes or elsewhere. Curiously, I found the CNN article, heavily commented on, in this Rant blog: http://207.114.86.27/index.php?HC=2&D=2008-03-20. Scroll down to the SubSahara section. Considering that the history of the mosque project, I would imagine there is rancor in some sectors. Interesting what political relationships this event reveals...

Hi Laura,

BBC news online reported this, too, a headliner on the World page, if I remember correctly -- pointing out the Q seemed to not realize that Islam came long after the completion of the Bible. Of course, Q isn't the only person with a confused chronology of the Bible's authorship. I remember an Oberlin friend of mine describing talking with a woman who said, "If the King James version was good enough for Paul, it is good enough for me."
